HISTORY
The Assocation for The Welfare of Albinos (AWA) has been a creation and development that comes from the core principles for addressing the concerns of Persons with Albinism (PWAs). The initial focuse in 2016 was to provide health care and inisiate awareness of PWAs challanges through societal reengineering programming. Historically, the essence of being a person with albinism has had a wide range of connotations associated with myths among the many differing cultures in which albinos are found. As such, the myths will range from the absurd to the violently dangerous. “Beliefs that, albinos are a vessel to bring good luck, while in other cultures... being a person with albinism, is a sign of bad luck, or the misconceptions of exposures to sunlight, visual acuity, resulting in avert social disassociation.” However, the more violent extremes are found in practice throughout several African Nations, which bring about the amputation of body parts in ceremonies to treat illnesses. Or attempts for healing through sexual contact in an attempt to mitigate the conditions of HIV, resulting in rape and spreading of the infection in PWAs.
The principal objectives were initiated in 2016, to aid persons with albinism living in Cameroon. AWA’s founder, Ms. Maceline Anwi Ngom is a Registered Nurse, and also a PWA who saw a great need to aid her brothers and sisters in the rural areas of Cameroon. As a practitioner, she allocated her resources and time dedicated to developing the initial programming agenda to inform and aid PWAs in coping with the basics of healthcare issues. The initial concerns, for mental well-being to raise their self-esteem during the first years of her initiative, have escalated with the added dimension of the more invasive physical health concern for cancers in the more remote areas of the country. During the first quarter of 2019, Ms. Ngom, officially established The Association for the Welfare of Albinos (AWA) with the government of the Republic of Cameroon, as a Not For Profit Organization. The Goal of the organization “is to raise awareness of health issues both physical and mental within the families and communities, and to rehabilitate through evaluating skill sets education, and retooling PWAs living in Cameroon. AWA pledge is to work in the interest of humanity without distinction of race, sex, and religion, while respecting the UN Declaration on Human Rights Resolution (no A/RES/69/170, 18 December 2014, law no .47/135, 18 December 1992 and no. 23/13, on 24 June 2013). (AWA) is a registered non-political, non-tribal, non-religious, and non-profit association in Cameroon. ● We raise awareness about Albinism for both youths and adults, to help empower persons living with albinism to be productive and independent through direct intervention and counseling,
● We help to facilitate the social and economic integration of persons living with albinism in society and assist in their adjustment, and
● We collaborate with like-minded individuals, groups, organizations, and associations and we are lobbying the government agencies that support or work in line with our mission.

Disparaging words and actions must be changed
Naïveté, ignorance, stupidity, and lack of education can no longer be tolerated. The physical and psychological abuse, myths, and discrimination can no longer have a place in the global societies of humankind. Persons With Albinism (PWA's), like any other human being, must and can learn to adapt in the face of their inability and/or their disabilities. So let our light shine.
AWA is building community and generational awareness of Albinism.
